The Merchant City in Glasgow is the historic heart of the city, which has been transformed into a modern and thriving destination for shopping breaks to Glasgow.
The prosperity of the area developed in the 1750s when wealthy merchants who made their fortunes out of shipping tobacco, sugar and tea began set up their residences and warehouses there. The area became the backbone of Glasgow as the city grew towards the West End in the 19th and 20th centuries. As time went on, fruit and vegetable markets sprang up and the area also housed the central cheese markets of Glasgow. The Merchant City fell into decline in the 1960s when the markets relocated to more modern premises further from the City Centre.
Since the 1980s, there has been a major initiative to revitalise and regenerate this important part of Glasgow's history. This renaissance has seen the transformation of abandoned historical buildings into theatres and art galleries, mingling with shops, restaurants and cafés. The area attracts both Glaswegians and tourists alike to stroll around this vibrant and scintillating part of the city and enjoy the multitude of sights, sounds, entertainment and treats on offer there. There is a public art trail to discover and an annual festival - the Merchant City Festival - celebrating the vibrancy of the area.
